Kangana Ranaut’s highly anticipated film Emergency finally premiered in theatres on January 17, 2025, after facing multiple delays since its production began in 2022. Although the film received mixed reviews upon its release, it has sparked controversy, particularly from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which has called for a ban on the film in Punjab.
Kangana Ranaut calls ban on Emergency in Punjab harassment of artists
Despite the state government deciding not to impose a ban, several cities in Punjab have chosen to halt screenings of the film. The SGPC expressed concerns about the film’s portrayal of Sikhs and its potential to defame the state and its people. Sukhpal Singh Khaira, the Chairman of the All India Kissan Congress, supported the SGPC’s demand, criticizing Ranaut for her previous comments about farmers and Sikh contributions to the country.
This is complete harassment of art and the artist, from Punjab many cities are reporting that these people are not allowing Emergency to be screened.

She described the situation as “complete harassment of art and the artists,” asserting her respect for all religions and highlighting her connection to the Sikh community through her upbringing in Chandigarh. About Emergency
Emergency completed its filming in January 2023 but encountered multiple delays due to clashes with other movie releases and challenges in obtaining a clearance certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). After necessary changes, the film received the green light and was released on January 17. Directed by Kangana Ranaut, the film features her in the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and includes notable performances from Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, and Milind Soman. It is also one of the last films featuring the late actor Satish Kaushik.
